ATLANTA -- More than 31 percent of the classrooms at Coan Middle School were flagged for cheating on the 2009 CRCT, according to a reported released Tuesday by the Governor's Special Investigators.
The investigation concluded that special education teachers cheated on the test by teaching it in class, using voice inflection and pointing to key words. Several teachers testified that they cheated because they were afraid of being placed on Professional Development Plans or being fired. (186)
Alice Waller, a special education teacher, testified that temporary testing coordinator Ron Washington instructed her to call parents of children who would probably perform poorly on the CRCT and tell them to keep the students home on test day. She also claimed to see Washington's, principal Andre Williams' and testing coordinator Wayne Campbell's cars in the school parking lot late one night during test week. (187)
Williams, who was terminated in 2009, denied cheating but claimed that "cheating is so intertwined in Atlanta Public Schools. It is such a part of what the culture is all about." (189)
Investigators determined that Waller, Williams and Washington all cheated on the 2009 CRCT. Dr. Tonya Saunders is now principal of Coan Middle, according to the school's website.
