Smoking sections could become slimmer in DeKalb County

DECATUR, Ga. – Are you ready for a smoke-free DeKalb County? If so, you could get your wish. Last month, the DeKalb County Board of Health voted to amend the county’s current Clean Indoor Air Ordinance. If adopted, the suggested revisions would make the county’s businesses, parks and facilities completely smoke-free.

According to the DeKalb County Board of Health, the currently ordinance:

 “Allows smoking at free-standing bars, adult entertainment establishments and outdoor venues, including parks”.

This amendment would ban smoking in those places, playgrounds, entrances and exits to buildings, outdoor entertainment venues and outdoor service lines and would decreases the number of rooms a hotel can designate for smoking from 25 percent to 10 percent.

The amended ordinance has been submitted to the Board of Commissioners for their consideration and adoption.

Each year, the Administration on Aging observes Older Americans Month to celebrate the contributions older Americans make to their communities. This year’s theme, Older Americans: Connecting to The Community, highlights the integral role technology plays in helping older Americans live longer, healthier and more engaged lives.

DEKALB is the nineteenth healthiest county in Georgia

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – DEKALB is the nineteenth healthiest county in Georgia according to a new  study published by CountyHealthRankings.com.

 

The study was completed by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.  It analyzed various health factors in counties across the nation including mortality morbidity, health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors and physical environment.  Each county in the state of Georgia was ranked on a scale of 1 to 156 with 1 being the healthiest county in the state and 156 being the unhealthiest.

Dekalb County, GA--  (submitted by Rosalie Ezekiel)  Did you know farm to school programs help kids to eat healthier and support family farms? Did you know healthy kids are smarter kids? Attend the first DeKalb Farm to School meeting, and  find out more about other initiatives in the U.S. and Georgia,  and what it takes to launch a farm to school program.

Participants will learn about local resources and share their own farm to school projects. Challenges, opportunities and first steps for DeKalb County will be explored, and the group will begin planning a strategy for the DeKalb County Farm to School program.  This first meeting will be facilitated by Georgia Organics.
