Recording artists raise money for Habitat for Humanity

ATLANTA -- An upcoming concert at Chastain Park Amphitheater will also support Habitat for Humanity - DeKalb.

O.A.R. and Phillip Phillips will perform at the Atlanta amphitheater on Saturday, July 26 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the non-table show.

Tickets range in price from $35.50 to $40.50 and can be purchased at classicchastain.com.

Habitat for Humanity - DeKalb spokesperson Julie Hopkins said that for every ticket O.A.R. and Phillip Phillips sell on their summer tour, $1 will be donated to Habitat for Humanity. DeKalb partners families and representatives will attend the July 26 show as special guests of the artists.

DeKalb to host workshop for former offenders

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb Workforce Development has planned a workshop that will give ex-offenders the skills they need to succeed.

The forum, "Bridging the Gap and Breaking Barriers," will be held Wednesday, July 9 from noon to 5 p.m. at DeKalb Workforce Development. It will be hosted in conjunction with the county's Council of Recidivism and Re-entry program.

Attendees will be given access to knowledge and skills that can help them find jobs, return to school and seek out community agencies that can continue to guide them on the path to healthy and productive lives.

Atlanta BeltLine to host bicycle tour this weekend

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership will team up with the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition for a tour this weekend.

The 7th annual Atlanta BeltLine Bicycle Tour will be held Saturday, June 14. Staggered rides through the BeltLine's 45 neighborhoods will begin at 9 a.m. from the Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark.

Riders have a choice of two tours: the full BeltLine, which is 27 miles long; and the East Meets West route -- 16 miles of some of the trail's most beautiful parks.

Advance registration is $30 for members of the Atlanta BeltLine or Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, and $35 for the general public. On-site registration opens at 8 a.m. and is $40 for members and $45 for non-members.

DeKalb Fire to participate in World CPR Challenge Day

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Wednesday, May 21 is World CPR Challenge Day, and DeKalb County Fire Rescue is offering residents a chance to learn this lifesaving skill for free.

The department has teamed up with American Medical Response to host CPR clinics at locations across the county. AMR technicians will teach compression-only CPR (set to the beat of the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive") from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Jodi Helmer exhaustively researched attractions, dining trends and farms throughout the state's six regions -- Appalachian, Atlanta Metro, Blue Ridge, Lower Coastal Plain, Piedmont and Upper Coastal Plain -- to write Farm Fresh Georgia: The Go-To Guide to Great Farmers' Markets, Farm Stands, Farms, U-Picks, Kids' Activities, Lodging, Dining, Dairies, Festivals, Choose-and-Cut Christmas Trees, Vineyards and Wineries, and More.

She will visit the Freedom Farmers' Market at the Carter Center on Saturday, May 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shoppers can meet Helmer at the community table. The Carter Center is located at 453 Freedom Parkway NE.

Race this weekend: Spring Fling

ATLANTA -- Atlanta's Kirkwood neighborhood will hold its annual Spring Fling 5K this weekend.

The race will kick off the Kirkwood Spring Fling. It will be Saturday, May 17 at 8 a.m., and will start at the corner of Hosea Williams Drive and Howard Street.

Runners will receive technical T-shirts and free beer and sangria tokens to be cashed in at the Spring Fling. All participants are encouraged to stick around after the race and check out the Tour of Homes from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Registration is $30 and can be completed at kirkwoodfling.com.

Search for WondLa author to speak in metro Atlanta

(WXIA) -- A popular author will hold two readings and book signings in metro Atlanta this weekend.

Tony DiTerlizzi writes the Search for WondLa trilogy and recently published The Battle for WondLa, the final book in the series. The Battle for WondLa follows Eva Nine, who must go into hiding when peace between humans and aliens begins to crumble, and the evil Lorac plots against the captured city of Solas, Orbona.

DiTerlizzi will speak at the Edgewood Barnes & Noble (1217 Caroline Street) on Saturday, May 10 at 2 p.m. He will also be at Little Shop of Stories in Decatur (133 East Court Square) on Sunday, May 11 at 4 p.m.

One of DiTerlizzi's book series, The Spiderwick Chronicles, was made into a 2008 movie starring Freddie Highmore and Mary-Louise Parker.
