Man sentenced to 15 years in shooting of police officer

ATLANTA – A man accused of trying to kill an Atlanta police officer was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Wednesday.

Jermarcus Jordan accepted a plea deal in the 2013 shooting of Christopher Smith.

Smith was off-duty and working a second job as security at an apartment complex when he was shot as he sat in his car on Nov. 9.

Authorities said Jordan ambushed Smith so he could sell drugs.

Smith was in the courtroom as the judge handed down Jordan's sentence.

Jordan, who never apologized for the shooting, told his family, "I love you."

Smith said he still has six pellets in his head from the bird and buckshot used to attack him.

Smith said no one came out to protest the violence against him. Yet just seven months prior to the shooting, an angry mob at the same complex, started throwing bricks at police in protest of what they saw as excessive force during an the arrest.
