East Atlanta Beer Fest brews fun this weekend

East Atlanta Beer Fest brews fun this weekend

ATLANTA -- The East Atlanta Beer Festival kicks off Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brownwood Park in East Atlanta, and features samples of 170 craft beers from 55 different brewers.

The event, now in its eighth year, has plenty of entertainment: Atlanta-based show band Burt & The Bandits, who features music from iconic country legends like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels and others; The Imperial OPA, a gypsy-style troupe of vaudevillian type performers with a modern circus-type of presentation; Animal & the Evolvers is made up of performers from the Old Fourth Ward and East Atlanta neighborhoods and plays music that they describe as being between The Beatles and My Morning Jacket – whatever that means.

LOCAL PROFILE: Indie Film Scene

LOCAL PROFILE: Indie Film Scene

ATLANTA, Ga. – Atlanta has come to be known as the home of young professionals, performing arts professionals and indie artists. The city that was once a breeding ground for hip-hop trends has become a haven of the aesthetic arts and artists alike.

Recently, while searching for this thriving indie artist scene in the city that is home to large-scale Tyler Perry Studios, I stumbled upon a “somewhat dormant” subculture lying low in the middle of town; it’s Atlanta’s Underground Art scene.

Just like movie buffs, members of world want to claim they were the first to see the most recent and popular cult indie films, films like “Reservoir Dogs” or “Requiem for a Dream”. Well, in Atlanta, artists can experience that excitement by visiting their local independent theatre. These theatres in most cases, have been around for 20 years, or more, are home to many of the most artistically gifted and innovative people in town.

DeKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb County Commissioner Stan Watson recently received unanimous approval by his peers to launch the DeKalb Film Commission.

The DeKalb Film Commission will serve as the county's single point of contact for anyone interested in filming in DeKalb.

"DeKalb County has been named by the Georgia Film Industry as a Georgia Camera Ready County, and we are looking to embellish this designation," Watson said. "Strengthening DeKalb County's ties to the film industry will provide an economic development tool and potentially increase the county's tax revenues."
